Unknown Coaster

Post by Mogens Larsen »

I'm sorry that I can't identify that particular coaster, but it's no doubt a dutch build, supposedly around 1910 - 15. The type was called "logger" and several of them was sold to Denmark during the years after the first world war. They were characteristic by their relatively shallow draft, flat bottoms and a large and regular hold with a large hatch. In Denmark they were classed as sailing ships with auxillary mashine. They were often crewed by a skipper and 2-3 young boys, who earned their required time in sailing ships.
My first ship was a dutch built "prolonged" logger, named ELSE of Hasseris (Ålborg), 180 tdw. Built 1905 by Niestern en Zonen in Delfzijl.

I placed the same photo on a Dutch forum and here is solution. She was built as the Dutch Cormoran in 1927, sold to Denmark as Holmi, after many names was she broken up as STF 1691 at Struer in 1983.
To Mogens Larsen: have you more dates of the Else, perhaps a photo?

Unknown coaster

I knew there was a coaster named HOLMI, but was not able to identify her from the photo. I wrote an article about my time in the danish coaster ELSE in the danish magazine "SØFART" no. 40, october 2003, but of course in danish. I can send you an electronic copy. I also have a few scanned photos of ELSE, which I shall mail to you.

ELSE was owned by the skipper H.W.P.B. Schroeder, a former captain in the J. Lauritzen shipowners. He sold ELSE (OURM), and it sailed for some years under the name ULLER. While I was with her, she freighted drainpipes, cement, scrap iron, aluminium bars, coal, and general cargo between danish, swedish and often norwegian destinations.

I can not imagine that no Swedish member of this forum knows this ship.

Until more facts are coming, you can look at this photo, which shows her after the re-building.
